    PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

    Grades 6-8

     

    Definition of a Physically Educated Person:

                A physically educated person has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities, is physically fit, participates in regular physical activity, knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities, and values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle.

     

    NYS Learning Standards for Physical Education:

    1.      Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, particular in physical activity, and maintain personal health.

    2.      Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.

    3.      Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources.

     

    Grading:

                75%- based on proper dress, effort level, and attitude each class period

                25%- based on skill assessment: acquisition / improvement

     

    75% Each class period (20 per quarter) students may earn 0-3 points:

                0 Points- No effort, no dress, or a failure to perform a required activity

                1 Point- Dressed with some effort or Not dressed with a high effort / attitude

                2 Points- Dressed with average effort and attitude (below 85%)

                3 Points- Dressed with 85% effort and attitude

     

    25% Skills taught will be assessed (usually authentic assessment)

                ****Skill improvement is as important as skill perfection.

                ****Rubrics will be used for each skill

     

    **YOU ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE EVERY CLASS PERIOD WHETHER YOU ARE DRESSED OR NOT.  THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS IF MEDICALLY EXCUSED BY YOUR DOCTOR IN WRITING***

     

    Units of Instruction: usually from 2-3 weeks in length.

     

    Possible Units:  Weight Training/ Fitness Room, Soccer, Basketball, Whiffleball, Volleyball, Speedball, Touch Football, Mat ball, Fitness Testing/ Training, Plyometrics, Agilities, Golf, Lacrosse, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee,  Eclipseball, Pickleball, Archery.

     

    What you need each day: T-shirt / Sweatshirt, Shorts / Sweatpants, sneakers made for athletic play (no sandals, high heeled sneakers, or sneakers that are slip on type); Sneakers must be laced up and secured on the foot, and a Towel (if showering).  All jewelry should be removed.

     

    When do I have physical education? Every other day.
