Parents/guardians are permitted to educate their child(ren) at home in accordance with Education Law and 100.10 of the commissioner’s regulations. Children of compulsory education age must receive full-time instruction taught by a competent teacher that is substantially equivalent to that provided at their local public school. Compulsory age includes the school years from which the child turns 6 years of age on or before December 1 through the school year in which the child turns 16 years of age. The school year spans July 1-June 30. Specific provisions govern home instruction. The NYS Regulations provide detailed requirements for courses to be taught, required attendance, and student evaluation.
Home Instruction completion through grade 12 results in a letter of substantial equivalency from the superintendent that allows a post-secondary educational institution to award a post-secondary degree to a student. A high school diploma or a GED is not issued as a result of home instruction/home school program completion.
To apply for home instruction, please complete the "Intent for Home Instruction" and the Individual Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) and return these to the Office of Pupil Personnel Services & Instruction. If you are new to the district or have an incoming Kindergarten homeschooler, you will need to show proof of residency and child proof of age to the District.
For additional information, you can view the NYS regulations for home instruction as well as our Board of Education Policy about home instruction.
